Possibly even more important than the physical adaptations that come with regular training are the mental ones. Making running a part of your routine decreases the mental energy demands of the task of running, allowing your runs to become semi-automatic, so they are governed by less specialized and energy-zapping areas of the central nervous system. This doesn’t mean that running becomes mindless, but rather, once you’ve trained consistently over many miles, certain things become instinctive. No matter your pace or competitive level, you no longer need to scrutinize form or constantly gauge pace, your body just knows what to do, allowing you to become totally absorbed in the whole of the experience.

The Magic of Planning Ahead: Penciling in a time to run each day takes the guesswork out of training and helps you avoid burning valuable mental energy trying to motivate yourself to squeeze in a workout. For most runners, planning workouts in one-week chunks can be a good way to stay on track. Pick a day each week to sit down and look at your schedule to figure out when and where you’ll be able to fit in a run each day. If there’s a day you’re booked with meetings, maybe that should be an off-day. Or if there’s a day you know you’ll be at your child’s soccer tournament from morning to night, you could consider scheduling a run from the pitches. By planning ahead, you reduce the chances of skipping workouts.
